Design that attracts vs design that repels

Our brains are programmed to look for patterns in images and designs. More often than not, we are attracted to symmetry.

There are just a few design principles that many designers use to create visual harmony and intrigue their audience. This doesn’t mean you have to study the golden ratio or Fibonacci sequence for hours to make good designs. You can create well-balanced and engaging designs through a few simple rules that I’ll get into soon…

Firstly, I’d like to demonstrate what the psychological impact of balanced design is versus imbalanced (or bad) design.

As most of you know, I participate in a few Facebook groups that are for female business owners. I love connecting, teaching and learning from other like-minded entrepreneurs. I’ve been in numerous discussions around ‘branding your business’ and I’ve felt that the crucial link between a successful business and a well-developed brand was missing.

So… I decided to create a visual demonstration of the emotional impact design has and how it can play a vital role in the success or failure of your business. I made two images (one well balanced and one imbalanced design) and sent them out into two of these Facebook groups asking:

"How does Image A make you feel (women empowerment) compared to Image B?"

Now, I must admit, I could have made these images relate more to one another, as I’d seem to cause confusion in quite a few women. But nonetheless, the results proved my point perfectly.

AND THE POINT IS??

By running this test I showed that well-balanced design evokes positive emotions and ultimately attracts your ideal clients. All the responses I received for image B were positive. They were words like:

  • Professional
  • Calming
  • Engaged
  • Involved
  • Clarity/clean
  • and so on…

While Image ‘A’ created responses like:

  • Vague
  • Anxious
  • Confusing
  • Disjointed
  • Overwhelming

and a few comments like “why are there men in the design when it’s women empowerment?”

It’s confusing, right?

Here are some of the comments that I received on the posts

I hope this has helped you understand the importance of design and how it can influence us and our ideal clients
