What is a brand and why is it important?

Defining what a brand means or what a term like branding actually entails is tough. It can be quite an abstract concept to try and pin down.

Is it just a logo? (No.) Is branding just about the way a business looks? (No.)

There’s no escaping how important branding is when you are building a business with longevity. Branding helps you to attract your ideal clients, sets you apart from your competitors and helps you ultimately convert your ideal clients with ease.

That’s why it is extremely important to understand the value of branding in your business. Let me explain some definitions of branding to you.

Firstly, What is a brand?

The simplest answer is that a brand is the impression that people have of a business. Your brand is the way they perceive who you are and what you offer. When people encounter your business what do they think of you? Have you made a good first impression?

That is your brand.

A brand relationship:
I’d like to take the brand concept a little further and explain the brand as a relationship between you and your audience. It’s about creating customer loyalty and connection.

Your audience shouldn’t be about the size of it, but rather the strength of the relationship between you and your customer. If you have a couple of raving fans then your sales conversions will be higher – regardless of the size of your audience.

You build recognition and relationships over time and you do that through branding. This brings us to our next definition:

What is branding:
Branding (the action of building your brand) is connecting and attracting through visual representations and establishing a particular image of your brand. You do this by creating logos, as well as defining colours schemes and fonts that align with your ideal client.

All of these combined become your brand and work together to build your online reputation and how people perceive it.

Why is branding important:
Branding is important because it helps you to create a cohesive customer experience and communicates your values and purpose consistently throughout your business. Whether that is on your social media, website or a personal call with your clients, your brand is showing up for you – especially online.

Has this helped you to understand branding better? I’d love to hear from you.

Last thoughts:
This is what your brand can and should do for your business:

  • Build trust
  • Help you stand out from the online noise
  • Stop people scrolling on social media
  • Build relationships with your ideal clients
  • Reduce the effort to convert your clients
